The introduction section of this article needs cleanup, it is unclear what the author means by 'the tree', and what terms 'I', 'vi' 'iii' etc stand for, as there are no references in the body of the article or any clarifications This is a complete reference on chord formation in the major scale. This is one of the chord trees that will aid in the writing and analysis of music.
You can move down the tree but you may not retrograde (go backwards) until reaching the bottom. There are, of course exceptions including cadencing using the IV to I and the so-called deceptive cadences that typically go from V to vi.
You may move across the levels and interchange the chords and can skip levels entirely if so desired. (Example- I, IV, ii, V, I, vi, ii, V, I) I vi - iii IV - ii V - vii diminished I Note numbers in parentheses are optional.
